The Gift of Spiritual Guidance

February 24, 2014

God gives His children directions, but not a GPS. A compass sometimes, but rarely a map. But more important than any of these navigation tools, God gives us a blessing for the journey, and a promise of the Spirit’s guidance. But God’s guidance is rarely crystal clear. This often discourages us, delays us. We would like coordinates for our journey before departure, exact locations and arrival times, how much gas (energy) will the journey require—and of course insurance just in case there’s an accident.

While we don’t get a GPS, we do get a guide—The Spirit knows the way. The Spirit rarely shows us the entire route, but simply says, follow Me, I know the way, trust Me. Yes, there will be missteps, mishaps, and possibly misfortune—but there is no adventure without adversity, no gain without risk.

"If you go to Him to be guided, He will guide you; but He will not comfort your distrust or half-trust of Him by showing you the chart of all His purposes concerning you. He will show you only into a way where, if you go cheerfully and trustfully forward, He will show you on still further" (O. Chambers)

Would you like a greater sense of God’s guidance in 2014? Consider meeting with a Spiritual Director. Spiritual Directors provide spiritual companionship and guidance to those who hunger for greater intimacy with God on their journey. Spiritual Directors help saints and seekers discern the movements of God in their lives, renew communication with God, grow in self-awareness, live in the present moment, and navigate unexpected detours in life. While God’s Spirit is ultimately the guide in the spiritual life, The Spirit often guides through trusted men and women who have been on the journey a little longer, traveled a little further, and have navigated life's landscapes of both joy and sorrow.

If reading about this kind of spiritual companionship creates a desire to learn more about the ministry of spiritual direction, then please take a closer look at HCM International's one-year Certificate in Spiritual Formation & The Art of Spiritual Direction.
