April 29, 2013

She played with tiny pebbles by a stream as the sun glinted through the vibrant green tropical canopy. She had been there before when the river roared after heavy winter rains, but today the water whispered. The air was fresh…nourishing. She felt safe. Jesus was there, and in her little girl voice, she quietly informed Him: “Well, Jesus, it’s my birthday.” Ah! And then, with exuberant joy, He took her hands and swung her around and around by her arms, shouting, “I know, I know, I know!” She felt the air going by her face and felt His delight in her. She felt treasured…celebrated…loved…and WHOLE. She knew it was the same joy with which He created her!

The reality? She sat in a rehab facility bed, blanket over her head and curtain drawn to capture a few moments alone. Both ankles broken, unable to put any weight on either leg, she was trapped in a place she had not anticipated. But Jesus had given her an experience of His presence that morning, and that would nourish her this day…her birthday.

He knows right where you are today. In the midst of whatever you may need to endure this day…this week…this year, let Him hold you, let Him swing you around and around, and experience His delight in you as you feel the air moving by. He celebrates you, His treasure. Look into His eyes and see the joy and love there…the same as when He planned for your existence.

Lord, You see me here. You know my questions, my pain, my fear. Sweep me away into Your gaze, where I can feel the Spirit-breeze on my face and be nourished by what I see. I will let You have me and hold me today. That is enough for me.

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

(Psalm 139:16 ESV)
